Core Mathematics is the perfect course for those who want to keep up their valuable maths skills but are not planning to take A-level Mathematics. It is complemented by AS Statistics. At the end of the two-year course you will have taken an AS exams (equivalent to half an A Level) in Statistics and Level 3 exams in Core Maths. This course can be taken in addition to three full A-levels and give you two qualifications in the time taken to study one.
You will benefit from the following resources and facilities:
- experienced, specialist mathematics teachers.
- books, notes, online resources.
- dedicated mathematics rooms, with interactive whiteboards.
- departmental computer suite with sixth form study area.
Core Maths has been designed to maintain and develop real-life maths skills. What you study is not purely theoretical or abstract; it can be applied on a daily basis in work, study or life, including a financial maths element. It will also help with other A-level subjects - in particular with Science, Geography, Business Studies, Psychology, Sociology and Economics.
Statistics are an essential part of the modern world. In the era of big data, where everyone and everything is being analysed for the purposes of research or marketing, being statistically literate is of huge importance. There are certain other courses where fluency in statistical methods is extremely helpful, so this course will complement A-levels in Science, Geography, Business Studies, Psychology, Sociology and Economics.
The skills developed in the study of mathematics and statistics are increasingly important in the workplace and in higher education; studying Core Maths will help you to keep up these essential skills. Most students who study maths after GCSE improve their career choices and increase their earning potential.
